The rise of modern cities is accompanied by the emergency of the police, museums and production of photographic images - Widely used as a technical tool to identify the criminals, madmen and deviants in general, which are understood as a threat to the urban space.
We are interested in creating a composition in which tensions and not definitive resolutions: tension between art and architecture; in between photography and urban production; in between art and politics.
Aqui é o fim do mundo is a series of sculptural works, in which Lâmina works with photographs taken by the duo from the regions of Porto Maravilha and Aterro do Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro. They are interested in the relationships between architecture and art. In terms theoretical-conceptual a concept by Hal Foster is particularly relevant. In the first lines of his ‘’The art-architecture complex’’ the author formulates the importance of the connection between art architecture in the process that involve image making and configuration of spaces and observes that governments and corporations mobilize these connections to give to cities marks of uniqueness: cultural centers, museums,festivals etc. And yet, as the points of convergence between art and architecture raise questions about new materials, technologies and media.
There are different reasons for the choice of this term to laugh at the connections between art and architecture. We highlight your association with the military-industrial complex and its upgrade into the military complex-entertainment. The first characteristic of fordist capitalism or disciplinary societies in terms of Michel Foucault. And the second of the financialized capitalism or control companies in Deleuze’s conceptualization.
These considerations are of extreme importance for our production. how to critically think about the artistic practice having as its horizon concerns the art-architecture complex ? Interventions police and urban restructuring are closely linked in Modernity – and updated in contemporary space – in relationships crossed by communication technologies, as pointed out by theorists such as Foucault, Agamben and Cavalletti -. And building museums and cultural centers play a fundamental role in these processes.
The title “Aqui é o fim do mundo” (“Here is the and of the world” is a reference to the chorus of the song “Marginália 2” by Gilberto Gil and Torquarto Neto.
